Academics

The first few years of formal education have the wonderful potential of expanding a child’s natural thirst for learning. Delphi’s Lower School curriculum provides a rich program that teaches basic skills, keeping that thirst alive and growing. The greatest emphasis is placed on reading, writing and mathematics, surrounded by a broad experiential program.

Beyond the focus on competence in basics, Delphi introduces students to a wide variety of academic subjects. Designed with an integrated approach, the Lower School curriculum includes study of geography, history, science, music, art, poetry and even communication skills. In addition, our teaching methods engage students in creative activities which encourage the exploration of their surroundings and help them relate what they learn to real life.

Learning How to Learn

A unique aspect of the Delphi Program is that all students develop good study habits. They literally learn how to learn. These are not study or memory tricks. They have to do with really understanding and using what is studied. From the very beginning of their Delphi education, students become alert to the various signs of learning barriers and gradually gain the ability to overcome them as they move through the program—at first with considerable teacher assistance and then with increasing independence.

At six- and seven-years-old, both our kids our reading fluently, with a good grasp of basic math. Both of them are well into multiplication and division, and my daughter just finished a book on the Trojan War! They’re curious, love learning and I have to drag them away from school every day!”

I recently completed an Initial WASC visit to Delphi Academy of Los Angeles. Nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Angeles National Forest, Delphi has been empowering students since 1984 with a clear mission: to help students improve the condition of their lives and communities through knowledge, reason, creativity, and integrity.

What stood out during my visit:

Proficiency-Based Learning: Students advance by demonstrating true understanding rather than simply completing grade levels. Each learner progresses at their ideal pace—a refreshing approach to individualized education.

Meaningful Relationships: With small class sizes every student receives genuine one-on-one attention from teachers who truly care about their success.

Study Technology: The school equips students with practical tools to overcome learning barriers, helping them develop deep comprehension skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Real-World Application: The curriculum ensures students don’t just memorize—they can meaningfully apply what they’ve learned.

During stakeholder interviews, the consistent theme was personalized attention and care. Parents praised the in-depth conferences that provide clear insights into their child’s progress, while students appreciated developing genuine understanding rather than surface-level knowledge.

Particularly impressive was that over 50% of current students are second-generation Delphi learners—a powerful testament to the lasting impact of their educational approach.

Thank you to Cindy Gainsforth and the team at Delphi!
